Is email taking up too much of your time?

On Tuesday of last week Janet Napolitano, the United States Homeland Security Secretary admitted that she gave up using email 10 years ago. Ms Napolitano has been in her position since 2009 and in 2012 Forbes nominated her as the world’s ninth-most powerful woman.

At a breakfast hosted by The Christian Science Monitor, Ms. Napolitano told reporters that she had given up on emails because it was taking up too much of her time.

“Because I was just getting, I was starting to get hundreds and hundreds of things all the time and I was like: ‘Why I am spending the time scrolling through this and responding to stuff that doesn’t really need to be responded to?”

The amount of time the average office workers spends on emails has increased significantly over the past 10 years and therefore the ability to communicate effectively via email has never been so important.
